TRAVELLING HINTS
If you are driving up from South Africa there are a few stops to fuel up: Komatipoort, Maputo, Manhica, Xai Xai and lastly Cumbana. Fuel prices may vary in different towns and as you go further from Maputo, the more expensive it becomes. These towns also have clean restrooms where sometimes you may be charged MT10 to make use of the facilities. There are a couple of options available if you would like to stay over on the way:
Blue Anchor Inn – 60km outside Maputo, Sol do Mar Halfway house in Manhica or Mareirate in Xai Xai.
Each town has a speed limit of 60km/h. Please be sure to keep to this speed as traffic police are always busy trapping with cameras. Fines are to be paid at the nearest Police Station and bribes are forbidden. Always travel with 2 emergency red triangles as well as light reflector jackets. Please remain calm if you are pulled over and do not under any circumstances hand over your original documents to anyone.
EXCHANGE RATES AND PAYMENTS
Avoid exchanging money at the border as you will be offered low rates. It’s best to exchange money at any exchange bureau or the bank in Mozambique itself. You will be required to present your passport. Most places accept credit or debit cards, Rands and Meticais
