About Ponto D’Ouro
Ponta D’Ouro is a popular destination and attracts many visitors from South Africa who want to scuba dive, surf or anyone who just wants to get away. The coastline from Ponta D’ouro up to Ponta do to Santa Maria is known for its great snorkeling, marine life and diving. You won’t have a hard time finding a dive operator or fishing charter here.

Can you imagine diving with Whale Sharks, Hammerhead’s and Dolphin’s, well you can have all of it here. While there are sharks in the ocean the good news is that there has never been a shark attack in Ponta.

WHAT TO DO

Scuba Diving:
We work closely with some the best Scuba companies in Ponta. You want to take your Open Water course or just spend a day diving. It’s all up to you and we can help with all your bookings.

Surfing:
There are several good surfing spots along the coastline. We have one the worlds’ longest riding wave according to the top surfers that have come to Ponta. Keep checking our website for future upcoming events or check Bomb Surf blog at www.thebombsurf.com

Fishing Charters:
Want to spend the day at sea? We work with several fishing charters in Ponta D’ouro and can make all the arrangements for you. Catch the big one and bring it back to Kaya Kweru to cook on the braai.

Dolphin Swim:
The Dolphin Swim is something you will definitely want to experience. We have two local operators and a resident dolphin population of 400 that travels up and down the coastline. Spend a few hours snorkeling with the resident Dolphin’s and you will remember it for a lifetime.

Kite Surfing:
This popular sport has taken off really well and the Ponta Bay offers excellent conditions when the wind is pumping. The best time is in August to October. There is a local operator where they give lessons and rent equipment.

Quad Biking:
There is one Quad Bike Operator in Ponta D’ouro that you can rent from. You must keep to the roads and trails as to not damage the existing eco-system.

Snorkeling:
Bring your snorkeling gear or buy from the local store, but you will want to make sure you check out the abundant marine life.

Light House:
Take a 15min vertical hike to the Light House, which is right on the border with South Africa. Here you get excellent views of the whole coastline and the lake systems in the area. Make sure to take your camera and some water or (oxygen for the not so fit!)

Turtle Spotting:
When in season (November to January) you might catch a Turtle along the beach late at night.

Local Pubs:
Visit the local Shebeen pubs and get a feel for Ponta at night. There are several Sheeben to choose from. Here you will get a chance to taste the local beer, 2M and Laurentina. You may have also heard about the famous Tipo Tinto Rum which is locally produced, try it with Coke or Sparletta. We call it R&R.

Shopping:
There is a craft market along side the road on your way to the campsite. Here you will find painting, carvings, clothing and almost everything else. Be prepared to bargain a little for a fair price, but that’s part of the fun. But you can also buy Quicksilver and Billabong clothing from Ponta Kite Surf in town, so don’t worry if you forgot your shorts or bathing suit at home. Ponta Patrol offers some great clothing ideas and you can buy different gifts and soaps from Magenta Moon.

Dining Out:
There are about 10 restaurants in town to choose from for a night out. It’s a great chance to try a Portuguese dish or some fresh prawns. Kaya Kweru is more reasonable priced and value for the money, but you will find that out for yourself.

Night Life:
Time for some dancing! Just ask around town and they will let you where the party is tonight.

Beaches:
If you want to take a day trip along the coast you can drive to Ponto Malongane. It will take you about half an hour by car but you will need 4WD or just walk along the beach it’s only 7km. The coastline to Santa Maria is 100km so there is no lack of beaches. All are pristine and in most circumstances you can have the beach to yourself. There are several ponta’s (points or bays) to Santa Maria. This region has the highest vegetated dunes in the world.
